Chick CoreaChick Corea is regarded as one of the important jazz musicians. I have mentioned Chick in the context of Miles Davis and fusion jazz. Chick was one of the talented musicians who played with Miles in the 1960s and continued to develop his own innovative fusion music in the 1970’s. His band, Return to Forever, featured electronic instruments and Brazilian, Spanish-American musical styles. Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke and guitarist Al Di Meola all became world class musicians. Chick's groups have won 15 Grammy awards. Spain, Corea's most popular piece first appeared in the 1972 Return to Forever album, Light as a Feather. Corea has continued to feature this piece in live performance and wrote an arrangement for piano and symphony orchestra in 1999. Spain has been a popular Latin Jazz piece, played by many groups -- I have heard noisy, terrible versions by less than qualified bands. My desire was to retain the melodic and rhythmic energy of the original, again featuring brass and flugelhorn solos. Sometime Ago - La Fiesta My involvement with this piece stretched out over several weeks as I attempted to edit and create new voicing for the key parts. La fiesta originally was a long piece that featured the vocals of Flora Purim, Corea keyboard virtuosity and a frenzied Latino closing. My performance is intended to be an interesting, briefer, more controlled version that features flugehorn solos. The MP3 player on this page plays an even shorter version of Fiesta as a taste.
