Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny created a jazz band in 1977 with pianist Lyle Mays, and bassist, Mark Egan. Their second album, American Garage (1980) became #1 on the Billboard Jazz chart. Metheny is considered to be one of the most successful jazz musicians and composer who incorporated different jazz styles, Latin Rhythms and ethnic music. He has displayed remarkable stamina as a performing musician, touring  for more than 30 years.

He is one the great creators of eclectic musical styles. His principle instrument is the guitar which he used as a controller of synthesizers to expand his repertoire of sounds and musical expression.  Metheny used the the Roland GR 300 guitar synthesizer and the Synclavier guitar system.  His constant companion, Lyle Mays also used electronic keyboards with great skill and creativity. The first keyboards were Oberheim and Sequential Circuits Prophet V synthesizers. Mays expanded his setup with the Synclavier keyboard and later with many other synthesizers.

Three albums released in the 90s: We Live Here (1995), Quartet (1996), and Imaginary Day (1997) were interesting, experimental and of great interest to me. The latest release in 2005, The Way Up, is a symphony length 68 minute piece in four sections, played at 90 concerts during their world tour 2005.
