The Sound of Music |
Three Dog NightThree Dog Night was one of the more successful US bands starting in the 1960s. The band's founders were Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells. They recorded the music of new songwriters -- Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Elton John, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton. Their distinctive arrangements and buoyant energy had wide appeal and many of their recordings were big hits. They eventually recorded 21 Top 40 hits and sold 14 gold albums in the US. I arranged and recorded several of their hits (2011): Harry Nilsson's song One(1969) Easy To Be Hard (from the musical Hair) Mama Told Me Not to Come (Randy Newman) Joy to the World (Hoyt Axton) Shambala (Daniel Moore1973) Never Been to Spain (Hoyt Axton) As a touring, performance band, Three Dog Night has shown remarkable stamina and persistence. Since 1986, they have performed over 2,000 shows. Their records continue to sell and play on radio stations around the world. Shambala refers to the Tibetan legend of the perfect town hidden in the Himalayas. The song likely refers to a Buddhist retreat in Colorado. Chogyam Trungpa the Tibetan founder of Naropa University in Boulder Colorado and Shambala centers which teach a secular version of Buddhism in many cities stated:" In Tibet, as well as many other Asian countries, there are stories about a legendary kingdom that was a source of learning and culture for present-day Asian societies. According to the legends, this was a place of peace and prosperity, governed by wise and compassionate rulers. The citizens were equally kind and learned, so that, in general, the kingdom was a model society. This place was called Shambhala."
The lyrics of the Daniel Moore vision of Shambala, recorded by Three Dog Night: Wash away my troubles, wash away my pain With the rain in Shambala Wash away my sorrows, wash away my shame With the rain in Shambala (*Ooooh... yeah Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah*) Chorus repeats. Everyone is helpful, everyone is kind On the road to Shambala Everyone is lucky, everyone is so kind On the road to Shambala How does your light shine In the halls of Shambala How does your light shine In the halls of Shambala I can tell my sister 'bout the flowers in her eyes On the road to Shambala I can tell my brother 'bout the flowers in his eyes On the road to Shambala How does your light shine In the halls of Shambala How does your light shine In the halls of Shambala Tell me how, how does your light shine In the halls of Shambala Tell me how, how does your light shine In the halls of Shambala We Seek Audiophile Perfection Noise is the enemy of high quality music.
